Extra Credit

EXTRA CREDIT REQUIREMENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

As stated in the syllabus, you may earn up to 30 points of extra credit toward your grade in this course by attending some of the allowed extra credit events listed below and writing a 1-page description of the experience and what you learned geologically as a result. Each event attended (and reported on) will be worth a maximum of 10 points of extra credit toward your grade. The extra credit reports you turn in will be graded and the full 10 points is not automatic. Each report is due within about 1 week of the event. For the events that require an admission ticket (free or otherwise), please attach your ticket stub to the report you turn in.

Allowed events/activities:

1) Attend the lecture on "The Hunt for North American Diamonds" by Kevin Krajick at 4:30 PM on Thursday Sept 23 in AG 250. This lecture is part of the Honors College Lecture Series (and is also co-sponsored by the ASU Department of Geoloigcal Scinces). Kevin Krajick is a well known science writer and the talk concerns the search for and discovery by geologists of rich diamond deposits in northern Canada. Your 1-page report on this lecture is due to me by Friday 1 October.

2) Field Trip to Papago Park. The trip will be offered twice - Wednesday 6 Oct at 5:30 PM and Friday 8 Oct at 5:00 PM. A map is shown on the web site. The report is due to me by Friday 15 October.

3) Attend ASU Earth Science Day 2004 in the Department of Geological Sciences at ASU on Saturday October 16 from 9 AM to 3 PM. It is a day of free hands-on activites, demonstrations, lectures, and other fun stuff to highlight the study of the Earth and other planets by ASU people. Your report is due to me by Friday 22 October.

4) Mnemonic based on the Geological Time Scale. Make up a mnemonic that incorporates the Geologic Time Scale. I will read the best ones in class and also post them on the web (Geological Time Scales). These are due by Tuesday 2 November. Please also in the page you turn in write out the real Geologic Time scale (Cambrian, Ordovician, .... etc) so you will begin to learn it.

5) Sesimology, earthquake location and earthquake magnitude - a web-based activity. Go to the 'Virtual Earthquake' web site, complete the exercise, print out the certificate you receive at the end (with your name and ID# on it), and turn the certificate in. Certificates are due by Friday 12 November.

6) Rivers, Channels, Floods, and Discharge. Go to the 'Virtual River' web site, complete the exercise, print out the certificate you receive at the end (with your name and ID# on it), and turn the certificate in. Certificates are due by Friday 3 December 2004.
